I didn't really have any swelling at all. And as far as my calf, I was afraid I would have trouble with it, but at this point, the only problem I am seeing is slight pain in my knee and hip on the injured side. I also have achy pain in my heel, but only at a resting state. That is pretty much it. I was not in a hard cast, so I was able to take my boot off every night to sleep. I used to do the alphabet with my foot when I had my boot off, just to stretch a little, to try to relieve the ache as well as stay some what flexible.

Hi..!
Thanks for getting back to me.

Congrats on being able to run! I am about to head to the pool to swim today and I am pretty excited about it. I am hoping to do a Tri this Summer so the heel break actaully will force me to swim and bike train all winter until I can get back out and run!!

I will absolutely check out the bone stimulator.... Thanks for the info!

Can I ask you about your swelling and your calf muscle? Do you still have swelling? And how long until my calf will return to normal? I am 7 weeks from the date of the injury today.

Thanks..!!

Congrats getting out of the cast. I wonder how different our fractures were, just because of the extreme difference in the treatment. I was only in a boot for 7 or 8 weeks, you were in a hard cast...

I got the official word last Thursday that I could start running again. I had been out a few times before this, but always scared myself because, although it felt great to be on my foot, at a resting state, it ached... I kept thinking I was going to re-injure myself.

For the past 2 weeks, I have been prescribed an Exogen 4000+ bone stimulator. You may ask your Dr. About this. I do 20 minute treatments 2x per day, so every 12 hours. It is a small ultrasound device that basically straps on my foot, and stimulates the bone molecules and promotes healing. They claim up to 38% faster healing. I have noticed the achy pain has gone away almost completely.

You will get better... Just hang in there. It killed me not to be out running... As far as getting back into it, I have experienced no pain or trouble what-so-ever in my calf muscle. I have however noticed a little pain in my hip and knee. The Dr. Said this would be normal because my leg was un-used for 2 or 3 months. There are certain dynamic type stretches you can do to keep loose. One that I did, was to take off the boot, and write the alphabet with my foot. It is non-weight bearing, and keeps things moving. It felt really good on my calf. There are several others, try to google something like 'non-weight bearing dynamic leg stretches' or something... No idea what that will bring up...

Thanks for commenting back, I was wounding how things were going for you, I was actually thinking about writing you.

Keep me posted!

So after 7 weeks in the cast and on crutches I am finally into the boot. But, I am only allowed 50% weight baring in the boot which means I am still on crutches for four more weeks!! But, I can start ROM and swim. I was wondering though...

Do you still have swelling in your foot? - My right ankle is still quite swollen and I still have brusing underneath my foot in the arch.

How long until your calf was normal again? - My calf muscle is just hanging there and I cant do any exercises for it since I cant weight bear yet.

Otherwise I have very little pain and am feeling good. I barely wear the boot and keep the crutches for a few more weeks...

I just ran a 5k with my wife, and took 7th overall, and 1st in my age group! I have been out running (short distances) 2 times since the race. Both my legs hurt so much, but I think it is because of the limited usage, not directly due to the injury. My calf on the injured is a little more sore than usual, but all in all, is fine. I have been taking more time to stretch before and after. I also have the stick and I have been spending a little extra time with that as well...
My heel is still a little sore especially when I return from a run. I don't know if this is good (healing) pain, or bad (re-injury) pain. I am looking into getting a bone stimulator as well. Ask your doctor. It is said to increase recovery by 38%. I should find out more this week about that. I'll post later in the week when I get more info!

Thanks so much for answering...!!

My friends and I play volleyaball in my yard; I broke my heel jumping my neighbors fence to retrieve the balls...!!! lol!! not as young as I used to be I guess.

I am 21 days from the break and I feel really no pain. I am in a hard cast now and still on crutches until October 15th. That will be approximately 6.5 weeks. I am hoping I will be able to go into a walking boot at that time, dump the crutches and start pushing myself again. I need to get back the gym as I am going out of my mind...!!! I figure I will start biking and swimming for the winter and start running again in Spring.
I signed myself up for a mini tri in May 2011. How is your calf muscle on the injured leg?

I am so sorry to hear your news. Do you know how it happened? I was off my foot for almost 2 months. I tried to keep my foot in the boot as much as possible. It was really tough to go from 40+ miles per week, to 0 literally over night.

Yes, I did run after ~2 months, but I probably shouldn't have. It did feel amazing, but I haven't run since. I signed up for a 5K this coming Wednesday, so that will be my next run, and I will slowly get back into it from there. I had my follow-up MRI 2 weeks ago I think, and the Calcaneus is still cracked at the top, but the lower 3rd has fused. My Dr. said I no longer need the crutches, or boot, but I need to be very careful, and start with non-impact activities such as elliptical... I felt very little pain as well. To me that was a bit of a curse, because i didn't have the pain to gauge my activities... meaning, I probably pushed it more that I should have. But things so far are looking up!

I signed up for the Portland marathon 6 or 8 moths ago... It is on 10.10.10. My Dr. said "Do not attempt it!", but I think I may go try a few miles of it. We will see. Please don't gauge your recovery off of mine, as I certainly am not qualified in this area. I can only tell you about my experiences! I'm glad you can find hope in what I have to say. It has been an interesting time of reflection and re-direction, but I can't wait to get back out there! Please, if you have any specific questions, Please feel free to ask!
